Wireshark is the world’s foremost and widely-used network protocol analyzer. It lets you see what’s happening on your network at a microscopic level and is the de facto (and often de jure) standard across many commercial and non-profit enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions. Wireshark development thrives thanks to the volunteer contributions of networking experts around the globe and is the continuation of a project started by Gerald Combs in 1998.

Wireshark has a rich feature set which includes the following:

  • Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols, with more being added all the time
  • Live capture and offline analysis
  • Standard three-pane packet browser
  • Multi-platform: Runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and many others
  • Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or via the TTY-mode TShark utility
  • The most powerful display filters in the industry
  • Rich VoIP analysis
  • Read/write many different capture file formats: tcpdump (libpcap), Pcap NG, Catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, Network General SnifferВ® (compressed and uncompressed), SnifferВ® Pro, and NetXrayВ®, Network Instruments Observer, NetScreen snoop, Novell LANalyzer, RADCOM WAN/LAN Analyzer, Shomiti/Finisar Surveyor, Tektronix K12xx, Visual Networks Visual UpTime, WildPackets EtherPeek/TokenPeek/AiroPeek, and many others
  • Capture files compressed with gzip can be decompressed on the fly
  • Live data can be read from Ethernet, IEEE 802.11, PPP/HDLC, ATM, Bluetooth, USB, Token Ring, Frame Relay, FDDI, and others (depending on your platform)
  • Decryption support for many protocols, including IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SNMPv3, SSL/TLS, WEP, and WPA/WPA2
  • Coloring rules can be applied to the packet list for quick, intuitive analysis
  • Output can be exported to XML, PostScriptВ®, CSV, or plain text

SharkFestв„ў, launched in 2008, is a series of annual educational conferences staged in various parts of the globe and focused on sharing knowledge, experience and best practices among the WiresharkВ® developer and user communities.

SharkFest attendees hone their skills in the art of packet analysis by attending lecture and lab-based sessions delivered by the most seasoned experts in the industry. Wireshark core code contributors also gather during the conference days to enrich and evolve the tool to maintain its relevance in ensuring the productivity of modern networks.

SharkFest’s aim is to support ongoing Wireshark development, to educate and inspire current and future generations of computer science and IT professionals responsible for managing, troubleshooting, diagnosing and securing legacy and modern networks, and to encourage widespread use of the free analysis tool. Per Gerald Combs, Wireshark project Founder …“Wireshark is a tool and a community. My job is to support both”.

Sharks strike terror into the heartВs of people around the world like no other creatures. Their fearsome appearance, large size, and hostile, alien environment combineВ to make them seem like something straight out of a nightmare. The sudden violence of a shark attack is truly a terrifying experience for the victim -- but are sharks really man-eating monsters with a taste for human flesh?

In this article, we'll find out why sharks attack, what an attack is like, and what kinds of sharks attack people most often. We'll also look at some ways to avoid shark attacks.

Ninety percent or more of shark incidents are mistakes. They assume that we're something that we are not.- Gary Adkison, diver ("Sharkbite! Surviving the Great White")

Although shark attacks can seem vicious and brutal, it's important to remember that sharks aren't evil creatures constantly on the lookout for humans to attack. They are animals obeying their instincts, like all other animals. As predators at the top of the ocean food chain, sharks are designed to hunt and eat large amounts of meat. A shark's diet consists of other sea creatures -- mainly fish, sea turtles, whales and sea lions and seals. Humans are not on the menu. In fact, humans don't provide enough high-fat meat for sharks, which need a lot of energy to power their large, muscular bodies.

If sharks aren't interested in eating humans, why do they attack us? The first clue comes in the pattern that most shark attacks take. In the majority of recorded attacks, the shark bites the victim, hangs on for a few seconds (possibly dragging the victim through the water or under the surface), and then lets go. It is very rare for a shark to make repeated attacks and actually feed on a human victim. The shark is simply mistaking a human for something it usually eats. Once the shark gets a taste, it realizes that this isn't its usual food, and it lets go.

The shark's confusion is easier to understand once we start to look at things from the shark's point of view. Many attack victims are surfers or people riding boogie boards. A shark swimming below sees a roughly oval shape with arms and legs dangling off, paddling along. This bears a close resemblance to a sea lion (the main prey of great white sharks) or a sea turtle (a common food for tiger sharks).

How To Write Query Letters . or, really, how to revise query letters so they actually work

This can happen for several reasons: you didn't make any really good mistakes; you made the same mistakes everyone else made; it was so bad I didn't know where to start. Pick the reason that makes you feel best, because that's the real reason.

Dear Query Shark:

Looking at the short list of reasons for not posting a query, all indicate the sender should endeavor to make mistakes. What happens if a query letter meets your every positive expectation first time around?

Dear Query Shark:

Dear Query Shark:

Hi QS. I've pored through so many of your examples but haven't been able to find an answer to this (although it must be in there): For a full-length novel query, do you advise mention of previously published short stories? What about non-fiction magazine articles? To me it seems relevant but. Thanks.

I don't undertant the relevancy of adding contact information at the bottom if it's not going to be utilized, so I didn't. I know you said it's "to get in the habit", but I'm a little paranoid about giving out personal info. Will that kind of thing prevent my query from getting posted here on QS? Sorry for the inconvenience.

Delaney, no it won't keep your query from being critiqued.

Dear Query Shark,

I have just come across your blog and I am encouraged by the response from your readers. I have revised my query several times, and my recent rejection was for no hook. I will go through your site for information and may be submitting a query for review.

Thanks for being a voice for those of us the need some direction.

I surfed the web and found you, you little writerly rock star! I still have so much reading to do of the archives, and polishing of the book, before I send you my query.

Dear Query Shark

Chomp away, as I know this is probably stupid. "Read the Archives" is a rule stated over and over. I started at the bottom of the list called "Archives9quot; and found no queries, shredded or perfect; I just found a lot of comments about QueryShark's wonderfulness (and having seen the front page, with the multiple revisions, I agree with them all!). So, um, where do the archives with queries start? Should I just look at the list that seems to be about queries?

The first query shark critique is April 2008. It's labeled #1. If you look in the list of previous posts you'll find it.

I just started reading and I find it rather fascinating and helpful. I do appreciate what you have done for all of us curious on why and how to craft a great query letter.

So, I'm starting reading as per your imperative. LIke a previous comment I went straight to the archives of blog posts. And your subsequent (gratefully acknowleged) comment has spared that swim up the wrong canal.

This may seem like a ridiculous question, but where can I find the email address to submit a query letter for review?

Hopeless Opus by dey_shark, raven_weiss

По ту сторону век by dey_shark, raven_weiss

Take you to another world by dey_shark
